After 40 years of waiting, the Phoenix Suns are virtually assured of their first NBA championship in 2007-08.

OK, the actual basketball season doesn’t start for two weeks. But the folks at EA Sports have already played a simulation of the entire 82-game season and the playoffs on their new NBA LIVE 08 video game.

And when it was over, the computer crowned the Suns as champions after beating the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics in seven games.

Steve Nash was named the Finals MVP after averaging 20 points and 11.7 assists in the series as the Suns brought down Boston’s new three-headed monster of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to claim the title.

During the regular season, the virtual Suns led the NBA with 58 wins (58-24), gaining home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. Phoenix had three more wins than both Dallas and San Antonio (55-27).

The Suns had a tough road through the playoffs, beating Golden State 4-2 in the first round and Houston 4-2 in the second before taking down San Antonio in seven games in the Western finals. The Mavericks fell in the first round for the second straight year, this time at the hands of Utah.

Boston had the best record in the East (49-33) and reached the Finals by topping New Jersey in six games in the conference finals.

The simulation also crowned Miami’s Dwyane Wade as the NBA’s MVP.
