Mesa Community College’s main campus was locked down Friday and later evacuated after a man called campus security and threatened to start shooting people at the college, police said.

Classes were canceled for the rest of the night.

It was the second time in a month the campus has been locked down because of a gun threat.

Police had not found the man by late Friday. They believe he made the 4 p.m. call from a campus pay phone, said Mesa police spokesman Detective Chris Arvayo. The caller said he would start shooting people at 5 p.m.

“We can't right now figure out why this has happened,” Arvayo said.

After the campus was evacuated, as many as 20 officers went room to room, making sure nobody was left in any of the 54 buildings on campus, Arvayo said.

On Sept. 13, the campus also went into lockdown when a student threatened to retrieve his gun to settle an argument.
