The Coyotes will be without one of their top defensemen when they open their season tonight against St. Louis at Jobing.com Arena.

Zbynek Michalek suffered a broken hand during a collision along the boards in Wednesday’s practice and will be sidelined from four to six weeks, a team spokesman said.

“I didn’t think it was anything serious until I went to the doctor for X-rays,” Michalek said Thursday.

The injury ends Michalek’s streak of 178 consecutive games plays which began with his NHL debut.

“It’s nice to get a streak going, but it’s not a big deal,” he said. “Injuries happen. It’s part of the sport. If it happens in the game, you can live with it, but in practice, the last practice before the season opener, it really sucks.”

Phoenix recalled Ryan Caldwell, who appeared in two games with the New York Islanders in 2005-06, to take Michalek’s place.
