Schnepf Farms carves out likeness of Steve Nash

“Here’s a corny way to say thank you for making the Suns fun to watch.” That’s what the plaque read that was presented to Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash when he was announced as this year’s celebrity to be carved into the cornfield maze at Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek.

The announcement was made Monday morning, and was even a surprise to Nash.
“I’m shocked,” Nash said as he stepped off the helicopter that flew him over his likeness in the cornfield. “I don’t know what to think. It’s crazy.”
Nash was chosen to be carved in the cornfield maze because of how important he is to Arizona and how well he has done playing for the Suns, said Carrie Schnepf, who organized the event and chose Nash as this year’s face in the maze.
“The Suns had an incredible season,” Schnepf said. “He deserves to be carved in a field of corn.”
Nash acknowledged that the maze did look like him.
“I can’t imagine how difficult it is to draw something in a cornfield,” he said.
The image of Nash in his Suns jersey covers the 10-acre cornfield giving maze-goers 4 miles of walking space to get lost in.
The maze takes about an hour to go all the way through, Schnepf said.
A GPS system is used to map out the figure in the maze when the corn is about 6 inches tall. This is done in June and July and then in October tractors are used to clear the final pathways through the maze, Schnepf said.
After months of planning and seven months of keeping the celebrity identity a secret, Schnepf said, “it’s fun to see it all come together.”
This is the fifth year that Schnepf Farms has portrayed a celebrity within the cornfield maze. Past cornfields have depicted Larry King, Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey and Louis Gonzales.
The maze opens Thursday as a part of Schnepf Farm’s Pumpkin and Chili Party that will be open every Thursday through Sunday in October.
