The latest injury report from Arizona State has defensive end Luis Vasquez (ankle) as a go for this weekend’s game against San Diego State, while running back Ryan Torain (ankle) and tight end Brent Miller (knee) are maybes.
That trio did not do much during Thursday’s noncontact practice, but ASU coach Dennis Erickson said that Vasquez could have fully participated.
“There was no sense having him out there,” Erickson said. “As for Ryan and Brent, it is a Saturday decision. There’s a possibility they can play.”
Running back Jarrell Woods (ankle), safety Brett Nenaber (hamstring) and center Thomas Altieri (knee) are expected to play. Altieri, a sophomore who is the backup for starter Mike Pollak, missed the first two games and is eager to develop synergy with the rest of the offense.
“It will be good to get back in the swing of things,” said Altieri, who played in two early-season games in 2006. “I need to get that field experience. I’ve been lacking in that, so to get experience so the rest of the offensive line can get comfortable with me. I want the guys to be able to trust me.”
JUST WIN, BABY
Erickson is 5-1 against San Diego State in his career, with one game vivid in his memory: a 30-28 victory in 1990, his second season at Miami.
“We should have gotten our rear ends kicked out,” Erickson said.
As a result, the coach makes no assumptions regarding this week’s contest. Asked if there was anything he wants to see from his team, considering that it will be ASU’s final nonconference tuneup, Erickson said:
“I’d like to see a win. That’s all I care about. I don’t know how the game is going to play out and how we’ll come out emotionally. ... We have to come out and play football and get a win.”
PAC-10 BLUES
Last week, the Mountain West Conference posted an O-fer against the Pac-10, with San Diego State losing against Washington State, Brigham Young to UCLA and Colorado State to California.
SDSU knows that drill. The Aztecs have lost 17 straight against the Pac-10. “I don’t know the answer,” SDSU coach Chuck Long said. “(The Pac-10) is a (Bowl Championship Series) conference that recruits significant talent. You would think that along the way, you would get one of those games. I believe in the future, we will.”
