Police arrested a Mesa Community College student late Wednesday after a lockdown spurred by threats of a gun on campus.
Gun scare sets off lockdown at MCC
The student was arrested on an unrelated warrant out of Tempe, but officers found no gun. Police identified the man as Eddie Collins, 25.
According to a police summary, Mesa police were called about 7:45 p.m. when a man threatened to get his gun and ran to his car during an argument in the southwest parking lot of the campus.
The victims knew the suspect carried guns, so they fled and later saw him chasing them with what appeared to be a gun in his hand, the summary states.
The suspect left his vehicle and ran to the interior of the campus.
Mesa police and Department of Public Safety officers arrived at the site and found a loaded .40 caliber magazine in the suspect’s car and what is believed to be the stock of an assault rifle.
MCC security locked down the campus for about 30 minutes while police, security and a police helicopter searched for the suspect.
Security reported about 11:30 p.m. that someone was leaving the campus in the suspect’s car.
When police stopped the vehicle on U.S. 60, Collins denied the altercation occurred and that he ever had a gun.
