The landscape of Phoenix politics could shift following the outcome of today’s city election with the possibility of a new mayor, several new council members, and possible budget restrictions.
Incumbent Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon is running for his second term against Phoenix businessman Steve Lory.
During his first term, Gordon spearheaded the Arizona State University Downtown and The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix programs in his effort to improve downtown Phoenix.
“We feel great about our chances of being re-elected,” Gordon said. ”When elected I will continue to better the city as well as improve public safety and education.”
As a former member of the California Bar, Lory’s platform includes enforcing the state laws, including immigration and criminal law.
“The election will be closer than people think it will be,” Lory said. “Gordon is a very unpopular mayor who has broken many laws and changes the law how he sees fit.”
In addition to the mayoral election, voters in odd-numbered districts will vote for council members. The City Council will have new faces because of term limits in three of the eight districts.
Claude Mattox is running unopposed in District 5.
Also today, Phoenix voters will decide on propositions that include a boost in sales tax for the hiring of more police and firefighters, a pay increase for City Council members and the mayor, and allowing for the continuation of exceeding state budget limits.
