Top pitching prospect Brett Anderson suffered a mild concussion in a one-vehicle accident that involved seven Visalia players early last week.
Anderson, a second-round pick in 2006, has not pitched since July 27, but even before the accident had been scheduled to take some time off because of arm fatigue, a team spokesman said.
Anderson, 19, was 8-4 with a 2.21 ERA in 14 starts for South Bend before being promoted at the All-Star break to High-A Visalia, where he is 3-3 with a 5.40 ERA in seven starts.
Outfielder Cyle Hankerd lost control of his Chevy Tahoe at 11 a.m. Monday as the players were taking advantage of an off day to drive to the Magic Mountain amusement park north of Los Angeles.
Infielder Blake Sharpe suffered a fractured skull and was released from the hospital Wednesday, the team said, but has been placed on the disabled list and is unlikely to return this season.
Right-handers Hector Ambriz and Cody Evans, catcher John Hester and outfielder Greg Thompson also were passengers in the vehicle.
“Monday was a tough day,” Visalia manager Hector De La Cruz told the Visalia (Calif.) Times-Delta. “We’re happy that Sharpe is getting better and everybody else is OK. We’re very fortunate.”
Hankerd, a third-round pick last summer out of USC, is 7-for-14 with one home run and six RBIs in three games since the accident as the Oaks won three straight to get within a half-game of the division lead.
Outfielder Gerardo Parra was promoted from South Bend two days after the accident and had eight hits, including two homers, in his first three games with Visalia. He also made a running catch at the right-field fence in the Oaks’ 3-0 victory Friday.
Parra, 20, was second in the Midwest League with a .320 batting average when he was promoted. He had six homers and 57 RBIs in 110 games at South Bend, with 25 doubles and 24 stolen bases.
Left-hander Dana Eveland, who made a brief stop with the D-Backs this season, began a rehabilitation assignment in Visalia last week, pitching two hitless innings Thursday.
• Tucson (Triple-A, Pacific Coast) — Left-hander Bill Murphy, who entered the starting rotation three weeks ago, gave up one run and three hits in six innings of a 6-1 victory over Fresno on Friday. He struck out six and retired the last 10 he faced.
• Mobile (Double-A, Southern) — Manager Brett Butler held a press conference last Monday, 11 days after suffering a stroke.
“I don’t know how long it’s going to take to get my equilibrium back,” said Butler, who is scheduled to undergo therapy three days a week. It appears unlikely that he will manage again this season.
