Small, tax-exempt organization across the East Valley are getting an early heads up from the Internal Revenue Service about a new form they must submit annually.
The IRS began mailing letters this month to organizations that may be required to submit a Form 990-N “Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations Not Required to File Form 990 or 990-EZ.”
More information is available at www.irs.gov, and questions can be answered at (800) 829-5500.
The deadline for filing the first e-postcard will be next year, with the earliest filing on May 15.
There are 4,434 tax-exempt organizations with an East Valley address (Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Tempe).
With the enactment of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, the majority of small tax-exempt organizations are now required to submit the e-postcard.
Previously, tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts of $25,000 or less were not required to submit information returns.
“If they don’t file the new Form 990-N ... then they could lose their exempt status,” said Bill Brunson, Internal revenue Service spokesman in Phoenix.
“They could reapply, but they would have to resubmit the paperwork involved along with a user fee. These smaller organizations don’t have a lot of operating funds ... and the current user fee can be as much as $750 for a small exempt organization.”
The e-postcard requires small organizations to provide a legal name and mailing address, any other names used, a Web address if one exists, the name and address of a principal officer and a statement confirming the organizations’s annual gross receipts are normally $25,000 or less.
“The forms must be submitted electronically and there’s going to be more information provided as we get closer to the (due date),” Brunson said.
