The Pinal County Board of Supervisors approved a tenth of a cent sales tax increase on Wednesday to form the county’s first-ever health district.
Diminishing grant resources and a struggle to keep up with growth prompted county officials to look for alternative funding for the county’s health programs.
The tax, which will become effective in October, applies to all purchases in Pinal County except for food items. County Manager Terry Doolittle said he expects the tax to generate $4.3 million a year.
Current sales taxes in the county are 6.6 cents per $1 — with 5.6 cents from the state and 1 cent from the county.
