Phoenix teacher's aide pleads guilty to having sex with boy, 14

PHOENIX - A middle school teacher's aide faces at least ten years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted sexual conduct with a minor for a liaison she had with a 14-year-old boy, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said Wednesday.
Alma Hernandez, 27, had sex in her car with the boy she met on the playground at Andalucia Middle School in Phoenix. Thomas said the victim's family found out and called police.
The plea agreement Hernandez signed with prosecutors mandates a minimum 10-year sentence.
"Adults who use their positions of trust to prey on children will be dealt with harshly," said Thomas. "The fact that the defendant is a female and the victim is a boy in no way diminishes this crime."
A new Thomas policy targeting sex offenders mandates the harsher sentence. Previously, those charged with similar sex offenses often received deals mandating only one year in prison, he said.
