Scottsdale Community College’s baseball team found the hits it was lacking Sunday and posted a 7-3 victory over Frederick Community College (Maryland) on Monday to advance to the final four of the NJCAA Division II championships in Millington, Tenn.
Steve Gray was a critical part of the offensive effort, going 3-for-4.
With SCC up 3-1 in the seventh, Gray hit a two-RBI single, giving the Artichokes some breathing room. He has four RBIs in the tournament.
He later scored when Phil Ortez walked with the bases loaded as the Artichokes took a 6-1 lead.
Frederick made it interesting by scoring two runs in the eighth, but reliever Drew Palen got out of a bases-loaded jam when Frederick left fielder Daniel Chevalier popped up.
SCC will face the winner of the Monroe Community College-Northwest Mississippi Community College game at 1 p.m. today. Frederick was eliminated.
The Artichokes, because of Sunday’s loss to Kellogg CC, will have to win their next two games in order to play for the championship.
