Scottsdale’s plans for a new Indian Bend Road bridge and artwork will be on display later this week.

The public will have a chance to view and ask questions about the project at a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Pueblo Elementary School, 6320 N. 82nd St.

Planned for the stretch of road between Scottsdale and Hayden roads, the upgrades will attempt to curtail flood events at the wash, which on occasion have closed the road or stranded motorists attempting to cross the rising waters.

The road project, which would provide an all-weather crossing of Indian Bend Wash, will increase capacity from two to four lanes with a landscaped median, turn lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks.

Construction is planned to start in late summer and will take about a year. The $13.7 million project will be funded from bond proceeds and transportation sales tax revenue.

With the new construction, the water that used to wash out the road would instead flow over a deep drop, rushing past five horse gargoyles, each in a different pose, creating the effect of running horses, according to a report from the city.

The theme derives from the area’s history of raising Arabian horses at McCormick Ranch.

The plan is for horses to be made of aluminum with a “bead blasted” finish, which absorbs light instead of reflecting it, the city reports.

And in the evening, the horses will be illuminated with blue lights from the east and yellow lights from the west.

Other artistic elements include 3-foot walls that mark the height of the water.

When: 6 p.m. Thursday
