Juan Carlos Bonavides, 22, was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault and other charges in connection with the 10:46 p.m. crash at Center and Main streets in Mesa.
Mesa police said they were able to determine through witness accounts and measurements that Bonavides was speeding when he ran into the rear of a vehicle driven by Dennis Nicol, 66.
The force of the crash sent Nicol’s vehicle and Bonavides’ into two other vehicles.
“Alcohol was determined to be a factor in this collision,” according to a Mesa police summary of the accident.
Nicol was taken to Scottsdale Osborne Healthcare hospital with head inuries. Two other patients were taken to other hospitals in less serious condition and five others refused treatment, according to Battalion Chief Mike Dunn, Mesa fire spokesman.
