Plans for the good of south Scottsdale

Comments | Recommend

Mark Scarp, Tribune Columnist

Welcome again to Scarp’s Scottsdale Sunday brunch, a review of the week’s local news where there’s soooo much to choose from. Strangely, no one goes back for seconds....

• Scottsdale’s professional worriers (other places have worriers but we have professionals) surely must be shuddering. To them, some recent news might mean that south Scottsdale is back on the ropes — or more on the ropes, depending on the degree of worrying you’re engaging in. But any shuddering is in vain.

Last week, the Tribune reported that Skin Cabaret bought its neighboring lot that housed a former tire store that borders the SkySong high-tech incubation center and that Breuners, the venerable furniture store a few hundred feet northwest of SkySong, is closing after 40 years in business.

But read on. You’ll find that Skin bought the land for additional parking — good news for residents of Belleview Street directly behind the club whose curbs often fill with overflow parking from the cabaret’s patrons — and that Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital bought Breuners in hopes of swapping it with the U.S. Postal Service for land the Scottsdale Main Post Office occupies, which the hospital is eyeing for expansion.

A neighborhood less intruded upon and a bigger, possibly better post office to replace one about 45 years old? What’s there to shudder about?

• That said, though, south Scottsdale residents are still awaiting the Big Turnaround that promoters of SkySong have predicted will come from the facility’s presence.

Certainly the Lowe’s home improvement store at Hayden and McDowell roads is no small addition to the corridor. And there have been smallerbut-noticeable improvements along McDowell such as the new Big O tire store under construction near Miller Road and some nice upgrades to the appearance of the 3 Palms hotel at 77th Street. Plus, new “infill” condos are planned or under construction in the area.

But the true test of the resurgence of south Scottsdale will be in the number of taxproducing auto dealers that remain on the Scottsdale Motor Mile or whether any that do depart will be replaced with new ones. Stay tuned.

• SonRise Community Church’s former senior pastor was reported to have said that God wanted the church to build a school on its north Scottsdale property. The church has since avoided that claim and the Tribune reported in April that the pastor has moved to England.

On Monday, the City Council will decide whether to take city attorneys’ advice and settle the church’s lawsuit against the city for turning down the school plan and save taxpayers an estimated $350,000 in legal costs to bring the case to trial.

While they discuss it, perhaps council members should avoid referring to this as a you-know-what of a deal.
