DENVER - The major league players’ union Wednesday filed a grievance with the league office on behalf of Alberto Callaspo, agent Mark Gilling said, with a hearing set for May 31. Callaspo was placed on the restricted list — the bone of contention — Thursday after his arrest following a domestic dispute.
Callaspo can remain on the restricted list a maximum of 10 days, which would take him through Saturday, at which point the D-Backs must change his status.
The D-Backs could option him to the minors, designate him for assignment, waive or trade him, and there is a growing sense that the D-Backs will option him to the minors while attempting to provide counseling and support.
“We have to make sure that we provide assistance for him,” D-Backs president Derrick Hall said.
The D-Backs are trying to set up a meeting with Callaspo, but none has been scheduled.
Callaspo, 24, would like to address fans and the media regarding his situation, Gilling said, but has been advised against it by his defense attorney, Ben Green.
MORE ROSTER MOVES
In addition to purchasing Mark Reynolds, the D-Backs claimed infielder Jason Smith off waivers from Toronto to shore up their depleted infield with the absence of Chad Tracy and Callaspo.
Smith, hitting .212 in 51 at-bats with the Blue Jays, gives the D-Back relief at second base, shortstop and third base, Callaspo’s job description.
Smith, 29, is expected to be available today, at which point the D-Backs must make another roster move after designating Casey Daigle for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. “We felt like a left-handed hitter who can play shortstop in addition to second and third was attractive for us,” Byrnes said.
Smith, 29, has played for six organizations in parts of seven major league seasons, with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs in 434 at-bats. He has 22 strikeouts in 52 at-bats this season.
DOWN TIME
Chad Tracy (rib cage) was extremely disappointed to be placed on the disabled list for the first time in his career Wednesday, but he understood it was best for the team.
“He was very down,” general manager Josh Byrnes said. “We need offense, and he’s one of our best hitters.
“He kills the Rockies. He kills (today’s starter) Josh Fogg. Bad timing. We want to win the war. In the long view, we need him out there for the long term.”
Byrnes said the D-Backs likely will try to let Tracy rest his injury for five to seven days before adding to his rehabilitation.
As far as bringing in Reynolds to replace Tracy, “We’d rather not rush guys, but (Reynolds) has done well at Double-A,” Byrnes said.
Reynolds hit 31 homers and drove in 90 runs while splitting time at Class A Lancaster and Double-A Tennessee in 2006.
Triple-A Tucson infielders Brian Barden (hip flexor) and Augie Ojeda (arm) would have been candidates for promotion except for their injuries.
SHORT HOPS
Justin Upton hit another home run, his fourth in three days, for Double-A Mobile on Wednesday. “That’s epic,” Byrnes said. …
The D-Backs moved outfielder Jeff DaVanon from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Reynolds.
