Arpaio offers Tent City for Paris Hilton, gets turned down

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has offered to house Paris Hilton in Tent City, according to a press release his office issued Monday.

However, the man dubbed "America's toughest sheriff" has been turned down. According to the sheriff's office for Los Angeles County, where Hilton is sentenced to serve her term, they had to decline the offer.

"It's true that he called," Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said in a phone interview Tuesday, "and it is true that we have respectfully declined his offer."

Arpaio had called Los Angeles County Sheriff Leroy Baca and the chief of jails at the sheriff's department Monday to offer the services as a solution to the over crowding they face. A judge has sentenced Hilton to spend 45 days in jail for violating her probation and driving with a suspended license.

Before all the tv stuff, I thought he was a trail-blazer. Putting the inmates to work was a good idea. Then all the media stories, his head just started growing.

With Paris saying no, I think his bubble may have finally burst. Sheriff Joe and Paris in the same city..... this town ain't big enough. Suggest removal of this comment

Year after year, Sheriff Joe is re-elected by strong margins. There is no doubt Sheriff Joe is the most popular Sheriff in the USA. People often forget that Sheriff Joe had a stellar career as a DEA agent. They forget that he is actually a highly sophisticated, much decorated, law enforcement hero, all of which he achieved before ever running for Sheriff. Of course he knows how to work the media. He is a master operator at all levels. The mostly silent, overwhelming majority of decent people support Sheriff Joe. Perhaps some of them would care to write in to provide balance in these comments. Go Sheriff Joe!

The Message is that Paris Hilton is not entitled to special treatment. In Arizona, Sheriff Joe would never give Paris Hilton special treatment. Tent City has room for all drunk drivers, Paris Hilton included.

The X bows down in honor and respect to Sheriff Joe for reminding Arizona, that unlike California, there is no special justice for drunk drivers who happen to be rich and famous. There is just plain old jail. Horrible jail. Green hot dogs. Pink underwear. Tent City in the summertime. Aaaaah, smell the stench!

I think Sheriff Arpaio has done good things,and everyone makes mistakes and aren''t perfect. We're not sure why he invited her, I'm just glad she's not coming here! We have enough problems of our own. Although you'd think that the Pink outfits would be enough to change her mind. Suggest removal of this comment

Sherriff JOE ARPAIO has done more DAMAGE than good. Why is the county always in the red when it comes time to balance the books. He is always saying how he is understaffed. Yet he can fit someone from another state into our county jail and then dedicate how many staff members to her security? Sherriff ARPAIO is DANGEROUS for this county! Suggest removal of this comment

Total media stunt. California state can't even transfer their prison inmates out of state - and they're considered state property. Even the Governator signed an executive order last year to make it happen. But transfers are yet being held up in the courts by the unions representing the prison workers. At a county level an out of state transfer is even less feasible. Joe knows media, though... Comment has been reviewed
