HOUSTON - Diamondbacks reserve Alberto Callaspo was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and assault Thursday afternoon and will not join the Diamondbacks on their road trip today.
Callaspo, 24, was arrested after police responded to a domestic dispute call Thursday afternoon in the 3100 block of East Legacy Drive. He is being held by Phoenix police.
Callaspo’s wife, Marianny Paola, suffered minor injuries, according to a police report.
The D-Backs today will place Callaspo on the restricted list or option him to the minor leagues, team president Derrick Hall said, while the matter is under investigation.
“We do not feel Alberto should be with the team due to the allegations,” Hall said Thursday night.
“We understand he has rights and respect those rights but do not condone the behavior he is being accused of. We need this time to gather the facts and determine what exactly took place and what further action, if any, is needed.”
The D-Backs will add a player to the roster today.
Callaspo, hitting .215 with four RBIs this season, had five hits in his last 13 at-bats after breaking a 2-for-37 slump.
He was the D-Backs’ minor league player of the year in 2006, when he hit .337 and led the Pacific Coast League with 165 hits in Tucson.
Callaspo can be placed on the restricted list because his arrest violated terms of his contract.
