Arizona State cornerback Chad Green remained in critical condition at a Scottsdale hospital on Tuesday, his football family hoping and praying for a recovery from head injuries suffered in a weekend car accident.
“Chad is an incredible spirit and a strong-willed person,” safety Josh Barrett told KDUS (1060 AM). “Everything is going to work out. I feel that strongly, and he is going to pull through.”
Green, 22, suffered multiple facial fractures and bleeding in and around his brain in a collision in the 800 block of McClintock Drive in Tempe at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. He has been unresponsive.
The injuries are “very serious,” said officer Brandon Banks, a Tempe police spokesman. However, a full diagnosis cannot be determined until swelling around Green’s brain subsides, which could take up to three days.
Green was not wearing a seat belt.
The other driver, Brian King, 43, of Mesa, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Police are still waiting on results of a blood test to determine if Green was impaired, Banks said.
Green, a senior-to-be who was battling for playing time at the cornerback spot opposite Justin Tryon, is a former roommate of Barrett’s.
“I’ve been to the hospital a lot, and being there makes a difference,” Barrett told KDUS. “The main thing for all of us is to pray and be there for his family. An abundance of love is what is needed right now.”
