Gilbert’s Patterson Elementary School chorus has been invited to participate in the National Anthem Project on Flag Day in Washington, D.C., and are seeking donations to help get there.
Choirs from schools and organizations from around the country will gather on June 14 — Flag Day — at the Washington Monument to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and other patriotic songs with the U.S. Marine Corps Band.
The following day, school groups will perform at monuments, memorials and other venues throughout the area.
Diane Walker, Patterson music teacher, said there are more than 100 fourth through sixth-graders in the chorus, and 40 of them will be making the trip.
She is asking for tax-credit contributions and other donations to help pay their way. Tax credits can be made online at www.gilbert.k12.az.us. Donations can also be made at the school, 1211 E. Guadalupe Road.
Walker said the chorus received its invitation just before Christmas.
“I don’t think I’ve been on the ground for several months,” she said. “I’m just so excited. I’ve seen all the sights ... but I’m so excited for the kids.”
The invitation letter says the National Anthem Project aims to renew American traditions and freedoms and emphasize the importance of music education.
