The Phoenix Xavier High girls shattered the Arizona state record in the 3,200-meter relay on Friday at the Arcadia Invitational in Arcadia, Calif.
The team of Jessica Tonn, Sarah Penney, Nicole Waters and Natalie Johnson won the relay in 9 minutes, 2.99 seconds. The previous record of 9:20.15 was set by a Xavier team in 2002.
The record time is the fastest outdoor mark of the season, according to Dyestat.com, a high school track and field Web site. The top outdoor mark in 2006 was 8:51.00 by a team from Suffern, N.Y. Xavier’s time would have been ranked sixth in the nation last season.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Brophy Prep boys broke the Arcadia Invitational 400 high hurdles record, with a time of 59.28. Corey Dysick, Matt Moore, Adam Shayer and Ray Polk ran a full second faster than the previous mark of 60.28.
TENNIS
• The Arizona State women’s team (10-8, 3-2) defeated UCLA (12-6, 3-1), 4-3, in a Pac-10 match at the Whiteman Tennis Center. Meanwhile, UCLA proved too much for the Sun Devil men as ASU (11-7, 2-1 Pac-10) was swept 9-0 at Los Angeles.
HOCKEY
• Bryan Bridges stopped 32 shots and four different skaters tallied goals to lead the Victoria Salmon Kings to a 4-1 win over the Phoenix RoadRunners in ECHL action Friday night at Victoria, British Columbia.
WATER POLO
• The Arizona State water polo team scored 35 seconds into the game and never trailed as the Sun Devils scored a 13-5 defeat of Pacific in Stockton, Calif.
Windy Ballejos recorded nine saves while five players scored two goals each for the Sun Devils (10-10, 3-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).
CORRECTION
• In Friday’s Tribune, in the all-state listings for girls soccer, Tori Howe from Mesa Mountain View and Kat McDonald from Phoenix Mountain Pointe should have been listed as 5A all-state honorable mention.
