Max Crumm is exhausted, and you can’t blame him. Since beating Austin Miller and winning the role of Danny Zuko on the March 25 finale of NBC’s reality competition “Grease: You’re the One That I Want,” the former Ahwatukee Foothills resident says he’s been flooded with newspaper and magazine interviews along with appearances on TV shows like “The Today Show.”
Then there’s the preparation for his role in the revival of the Broadway musical, which opens Aug. 19.
“I’m taking voice lessons and working out,” the 21-yearold says from Los Angeles. “I’ve just been enjoying every minute of it.”
Crumm, whom the judges hailed as the underdog during the competition, says the attention he’s received from fans has been unbelievable.
“It’s pretty crazy because everywhere I go on the street people recognize me,” says Crumm, a graduate of Desert Vista High School who has worked with Desert Stages Theatre and Valley Youth Theatre. “It’s so cool. It’s really cool to meet people that voted for me.”
Crumm says he was surprised when a woman who was with her two kids called out his name at a Los Angeles movie theater recently.
“It’s interesting because I have all different kinds of people come up to me,” he says. “It’s not just, like, little girls. It’s boys. It’s moms. It’s old ladies. It’s so funny.”
The soon-to-be Broadway actor says he’ll pack his bags and head to New York at the end of May to prepare for June rehearsals.
“I’m looking through Craigslist and trying to figure out where I’m going to live,” he says.
And although the Broadway production doesn’t debut until the end of summer, Crumm says a lot of doors have already started to open thanks to “Grease.”
“I want to do movies and I’ve been talking to people about doing movies,” he says, noting he also wants to continue with Broadway productions. “I met with the heads of casting at NBC and talked about TV shows. I think movies are in the works. I definitely want to do movies.”
He’s also hoping to get back home to the East Valley to visit his family.
“I’m going to go back to Arizona, but I have to plan like a week to go back because I still have a lot of stuff I’m doing out here,” he says.
