Rival religious group disputes Mormon teachings

Lawn Griffiths, Tribune

Arguing that Mormon missionaries aren’t telling what they really believe when they go door to door in quest of new followers, the Mesa-based Concerned Christians are distributing free DVDs to East Valley homes to ensure people “hear both sides of the story.”

About 100 volunteers from evangelical churches spread out across parts of Mesa, Tempe, Chandler and Gilbert on Sunday, putting some 15,000 DVDs in sacks on doorknobs.

“We had 50,000 to put out but we didn’t get enough people to do it right, so we are going to do it again,” said Jim Robertson, executive director of Concerned Christians and a former Mormon who co-founded the group almost 35 years ago. They needed about 500 volunteers to accomplish the task, he said.

“We’ve not selected the next day” to distribute the DVDs, Robertson said Tuesday.

The DVD “Jesus Christ/Joseph Smith,” was produced by Living Hope Ministries of Brigham City, Utah.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has disputed the DVD’s accuracy.

The church was founded by Joseph Smith in 1830 in New York. Today, it claims more than 13 million members worldwide, including 5.5 million in the United States.

Robertson said the DVD was made for anyone to watch. “It is not strictly for Mormons,” he said. “If the Mormon missionaries who are going door to door were to tell the truth about what they believe, then we would be out of a job,” Robertson said. “But the point is, they don’t tell the truth. They just tell you what they want you to hear — not the whole thing.”

Robertson said his group wants people to “hear both sides of the story before they make a decision” about Mormon teachings.

A representative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dismissed the DVD. Spokeswoman Kim Farah said Tuesday: “Such attempts to discredit The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is nothing new. This latest DVD is full of mis-characterizations of Joseph Smith and the history and doctrine of the church.”

She asked that people wanting to learn more about the church view its Web sites, including www.lds.org.

A few thousand copies of the controversial film also were distributed Sunday in the eastern Arizona communities of Taylor and Snowflake, where Mormon numbers are strong, and in Tucson.

“Members in our church are strong in their belief and through their own study, meditation and prayer, they have arrived at their own conclusion, so a video like this that tries to raise questions in their minds regarding the veracity of church doctrine is not going to sway them,” said Don Evans, the church’s Arizona spokesman.

Volunteers made a similar effort last October, putting more than 4,000 DVDs titled “The Bible vs. The Book of Mormon,” at homes in Taylor and Snowflake.
