Who: Barb Like, 55, of Mesa, a sales associate at Dillard’s.
How the collection began: I worked as a drugstore cashier in high school, and they had a Mickey Mouse watch that I admired and purchased with my first paycheck, and that is what started it all. I later went to Disneyland on vacation with a friend. We walked through the jewelry store, and I purchased five Disney character watches.
How many pieces: My collection has grown through the years to total 792.
Where you showcase your collection: I showcase my collection in six lighted revolving watch display cases that I have acquired from different jewelry stores. I also keep the watches in my china hutch. In addition to the collection, I also have personal license plates that say “WATCHES” and we just purchased a unique coffee table that is a very large watch.
The prized piece: I have so many favorites. Some have sentimental value because they were given to me by family and friends. But if I had to choose one, it would be my Richard Nixon watch. The eyes shift back and forth as it ticks, and the words “I’m not a crook” are across the face.
What else you collect: Since we recently decorated our dining room with a grape theme, I have been collecting grape items. And then there is my husband’s CD collection, but that would be another whole article!
