Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt decided to reward a longtime assistant Wednesday to fill the wide receivers coach spot left vacant when Richie Anderson was fired.
Mike Miller, hired by Whisenhunt originally as the Cards’ offensive assistant, was promoted to the receivers post. Miller had been an offensive assistant with Whisenhunt in Pittsburgh from 1999-2003 before moving to the Buffalo Bills as tight ends coach in 2004 and 2005.
Miller was out of the NFL last season, although he did coach quarterbacks for Berlin in NFL Europe.
The team hired former NFL receiver Dedric Ward to replace Miller as offensive assistant.
Whisenhunt fired Anderson March 11, a few days after Anderson was arrested for soliciting a prostitute during a Phoenix police sting operation.
Miller’s inexperience coaching receivers mirrors the inexperience of Anderson, a longtime NFL fullback. But as with Anderson, Miller is expected to get help from offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who coached receivers in Dallas last season.
Miller should also benefit from the hiring of Ward, who spent eight seasons in the NFL before retiring after the 2004 season. Ward, who played for the Jets, Cowboys, Dolphins, Ravens and Patriots, had 167 career receptions.
Ward spent the 2006 season as receivers coach for Missouri State University.
