Mesa will get the Valley’s fourth IMAX theater by the end of the year.

Ontario-based IMAX Corp. said it struck a deal with Dickinson Theatres to open an IMAX at the planned Masterpiece 12 at Signal Butte and Baseline roads.

Ed Carl, Dickinson’s vice president/film buyer, said the IMAX would open by October.

“I think it’s going to be somewhere around 300 (seats),” he said.

“The North American IMAX theatre network continues to grow as more Hollywood event titles are released to our theatres and more exhibitors realize the IMAX business provides an economical way to offer consumers a differentiated experience that can’t be replicated at home,” IMAX executives said in a written statement.

The planned theater in Mesa is part of four others that are planned in Little Rock, Ark., Springfield, Mo., and Wichita, Kan., between 2007 and 2009. The location of the fifth theater is yet to be determined.

Mesa’s IMAX, which will be one of only four in the Valley, is big news for Mesa, said Tim Dollander, a principal with Superstition Gateway’s developer Scottsdale-based Diversified Partners,

“To hear news like this — we are very excited,” he said.

Dollander said companies are being drawn to that area of

Mesa for its demographics.

He added the population near Superstition Gateway could grow by 1 million in 20 to 30 years.

IMAX has built a business around showcasing documentaries and other motion pictures on extra large screens with higher image and sound quality than that available in traditional movie theaters.

The company said it had 280 IMAX theaters in operation in 40 countries.
