GILBERT -- The man suspected of kidnapping and raping a missing Gilbert woman met her at a gas station days before her disappearance, said Daniel Smith, 20, who works at Banner Baywood Hospital with the 19-year-old woman.
Jackie Hartman has been missing since early Sunday when she was out with Jonathan Burns, 25. Burns was arrested Monday night on suspicion of kidnapping and raping Hartman. Police are continuing to search for Hartman, a Chandler-Gilbert Community College nursing student. However, they are treating the case as a homicide.
Smith said he warned Hartman to be careful of the man, and she asked him to keep the relationship a secret. He said the man was assertive and asked for her phone number, so she gave it to him.
“She didn’t know what she was getting herself into,” Smith said.
Police are currently searching near the Sunflower area and along state Route 87 for clues. Anyone with information is asked to call (480) 503-6500.
