1966 SHELBY COBRA 427 ‘SUPER SNAKE’ $5.5 MILLION

Lisa Olson, Tribune

This year’s figure includes the $5.5 million sale of a 1966 Shelby Cobra, a twin-supercharged car built and driven by Automotive Hall-of-Famer Carroll Shelby.

That’s the most ever paid for an American car at the auction. Other top sellers included the 1993 Hummer HI “CNN’s Warrior One” and two 1954 Dodge Firearrow convertible concept cars. They each sold for $1.1 million.

The six-day event, which ended Sunday, drew more than 250,000 visitors, auction officials said Monday.

It was the 36th year of the auction.
