Maricopa County jail inmates will enjoy a Christmas treat of hot cocoa and cinnamon buns this morning, compliments of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, radio host Charles Goyette and Jim Clark of Clark & Sons Vending.
“Despite being in jail, those who have broken the law can certainly celebrate a bit of Yuletide,” Arpaio said in a news release. “It will make it seem a little more like home.”
Two months ago, Goyette challenged Arpaio on KFNX, 1100 AM, to do something nice for the inmates, suggesting he serve them coffee. Arpaio refused to spring for the coffee, but agreed to serve hot chocolate to the county’s 9,000 inmates if it could be done at no cost.
Clark donated 1,500 pounds of hot chocolate powder — enough for 1,000 gallons — plus cups, lids and 10,800 cinnamon buns.
“In cooperation with Sheriff Arpaio, this is my way of giving a little Christmas cheer to his inmates and to let them know, in a small way, that they are remembered,” Clark said in a news release. The hot chocolate will be served from 11 a.m. until every drop is gone, according to the news release.
