While Arizona State introduced its new football coach on Monday, the outgoing one evidently has no shortage of job options. Dirk Koetter received five job offers not long after his firing was announced on Nov. 26, a source said, and the Miami Herald reported on Monday that he is a candidate for the Miami Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator position.
Koetter, who will coach the Sun Devils in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve, has declined to discuss his future plans, although he has said that he expects to coach again soon.
“There will be a time for me to talk about that,” Koetter said on Sunday, “but it’s not right now.”
New Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon has been promised the funds to hire a top-flight offensive coordinator.
The Herald identified Koetter and Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers as potential candidates the position.
GOOD BUSINESS
The hiring of Dennis Erickson as coach on Monday resulted in brisk business at the athletic ticket office.
As of 4 p.m., 30 new season-ticket subscriptions — totalling more than $15,000 in revenue — were sold.
Many of the buyers indicated that their decision was based on Erickson’s arrival, a school official said.
BURGESS UPDATE
The Hawaii Bowl should mark the return of receiver/cornerback Rudy Burgess, who has not played since suffering a high ankle sprain on Oct. 28 at Washington.
The lengthy time off before the game has eased Burgess’ mind about his recovery. During the regular season, he felt pressure to come back every week, and disappointment when he could not.
“Now that I know I have a lot more time to get ready, I can take things slower and make sure that my ankle is healing (properly),” Burgess said. “I’m getting closer to game speed. I’ll be ready to go for the game.”
NEW LOOK
Since the start of Hawaii Bowl practices last week, quarterback Rudy Carpenter has donned a new piece of equipment: a clear helmet eye shield. Whether he will wear it in the bowl game is unclear.
“I just have it to look like everybody else,” Carpenter said.
