Scottsdale Horizon has decided not to appeal its placement into 5A Division II for the next two-year scheduling block beginning next fall.
The Huskies, a member of the 5A Desert Valley Region the past two years, were originally placed into Division II two years ago, but successfully appealed their way into Division I.
"We're going through a period at Horizon where our population has leveled off a bit, and across the board it'll be a good move for our total athletic program," Horizon athletic director John Pierce said.
Leaving the Desert Valley Region affords the Huskies a better chance to compete in football and basketball without the likes of Phoenix Brophy or Phoenix St. Mary's. The move should make Horizon's baseball and softball teams— already top programs competitively in Division I — among the best in Division II.
It also allows the school to continue playing Desert Valley teams in their nonregion schedules.
"There are many thoughts that's the best division for our school to be in for the next block," Pierce said. "Who knows what enrollment is going to be, and this is coming around every two years.
"It might be we try it, we like it and stick with it in two years or we're not happy and want to regain some of what we used to be."
