The Cardinals got good news Friday when the MRI on rookie backup quarterback Matt Leinart’s right (nonthrowing) shoulder showed Leinart with only a sprain. Leinart will have some pain, coach Dennis Green said, but he might not miss much practice.
“Matt is tough as all get out,” Green said. “He is looking forward to going out and practice and helping in any way he can.”
Leinart hurt the shoulder during Thursday night’s 29-23 preseason loss to Denver.
The Cards have a walkthrough this afternoon and practice again Sunday. Green said Leinart might not work out Sunday and could miss practice when the team reconvenes Wednesday. The Cardinals open the season Sept. 10 against San Francisco. Kurt Warner is the starter at quarterback.
“He’s not going to want to sit out,” Green said, pointing out that Leinart was working out on the treadmill Friday morning after undergoing the MRI.
Leinart completed 10-of-15 pass for 125 yards and a touchdown against the Broncos before coming out of the game.
