The PGA Tour, in conjunction with the Thunderbirds, will announce a new golf tournament for the East Valley today, even though the $5 million Fry’s Electronics Open will be leaving after its one and only week in mid-October 2007.
Both the PGA Tour and Thunderbirds confirmed the announcement will come today but provided no details. The Tribune has learned the PGA Tour asked the Thunderbirds, the civic organization that hosts the FBR Open, and Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale to be the temporary site for the event until a new course in northern California is ready to take it over in 2008.
The Fry’s Electronics Open will be part of the Fall Series, originally dubbed the “Quest for the Card.’’ It is designed to help players not yet among the top money winners for the season to earn enough to keep their PGA Tour cards.
Big-name players like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and anyone else among the top 25 to 50 money winners are not expected to play, as their regular season is expected to end in September at the big-bucks Fed-Ex Cup.
The Thunderbirds will announce at noon today from the Fairway House at Grayhawk Golf Club that the Fry’s Electronics Open will have a one-year stay.
A simultaneous teleconference also will take place from Akron, Ohio, where PGA commissioner Tim Finchem will fill in the details of what is expected to be a six-tournament fall swing.
