Medicis seeking more space

Scottsdale-based Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. plans to move from its current headquarters at Hayden Road and Via de Ventura about a mile east to Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land.

The new headquarters, near the Scottsdale Pavilions shopping center, likely will still boast a Scottsdale address.

The new quarters will house up to 1,000 employees in a couple of buildings that will quadruple the 75,000-squarefoot space in its current building. Medicis hopes to move into a 150,000-square-foot building in about two years, and has plans for a second, equally large facility, said company chief financial officer Mark Prygocki.

Medicis follows the lead of several other former Scottsdale-based companies, such as Fender Musical Instruments, Cold Stone Creamery and Rural/Metro Corp., that jumped across Pima Road to build on Indian land.

As the local company gears up to battle rival Allergan for the cosmetic dermatology market share and grow its core products, it needs more space for more employees, Prygocki said.

Medicis has about 200 employees at its Scottsdale headquarters, he said, and staff could double by 2008.

“We need it as our pipeline evolves,” Prygocki said. “We’re bursting at the seams.”

The company could fill up the second building within six years, he said.

Medicis star product Restylane fills facial wrinkles, and the company recently purchased U.S. rights for Reloxin, an injectable resembling Botox that is in clinical trials and has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The country’s leading independent dermatological products company, Medicis made its name in prescription products, such as the acne treatment Dynacin.

The company set up shop in Scottsdale in February 2000, moving from smaller quarters in Phoenix.
