Incumbent City Councilman Bob Caccamo won his re-election bid in Chandler’s seven-way council race Tuesday. Four candidates, Trinity Donovan, Becky Jackson, Chris Stage and Jeff Weninger, will square off in a May runoff for the remaining two seats.
Candidates Frank Peake and Rick Heumann were eliminated in Tuesday’s primary election.
Donovan, 28, an executive with Valley of the Sun United Way, led the runoff pack in votes counted Tuesday.
As did other candidates, Donovan spent the day at two polling places offering last-minute campaign greetings to voters entering the polls. The move might have done some good.
“I think I voted for her because she hung out all day,” said Chandler resident Kim Brontsema, 42, who had to make three trips to her polling place at the
Chandler Presbyterian Church because she didn’t have the correct identification.
Trailing close behind Donovan was Becky Jackson, 52, president/CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.
Chris Stage, 42, executive director of nonprofit Neighbors Who Care, and Jeff Weninger, 35, a local restaurant owner, will also vie for the remaining seats.
Chandler voters also overwhelmingly passed Proposition 300, which will allow the city to extend Chandler’s “home rule” approach to budget limits over the next four years.
Under state law, voters can opt to allow the city to spend a larger amount of its available revenue. City officials would have had to cut next year’s budget by $112 million if the measure had not passed.
