Photographer Robert Knight took the last picture of rocker Stevie Ray Vaughan before the guitar legend hopped on a helicopter that crashed on its way to Chicago, killing Vaughan and four others.

Knight also took a picture of Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page while he was drunk during a concert, his hands struggling to keep the guitar steady, eyes barely open.

During the past four decades, Knight has captured countless images of rock ’n’ rollers in their heydays.

Many of those images, some of which have become album covers and many of which are famous worldwide, will be on display and for sale in Scottsdale as Knight visits to tell the stories behind the photos.

The Rock Star Gallery of Music Collectibles and Celebrity Fine Art, at the Scottsdale Promenade on the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Frank Loyd Wright Boulevard, will display Knight’s images of some of rock ’n’ roll’s greatest artists, such as Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton.

Knight will take the stage at 6 p.m. Friday to explain to visitors what was going on as he was shooting the rockers and describe his experiences with the legends.

"A lot of photographers dream of working with major artists," Knight said Monday from a movie set in Hollywood, Calif. "Everybody that was ever my hero, I’ve worked with."

Knight said he was 14 when he decided photographing rock stars was for him.

"I looked at album covers, and those pictures emotionally impacted me," he said. "That’s when I knew what I wanted to do."

Two months after he began his career, Knight was shooting Clapton and Page when they were members of The Yardbirds. He said the show at the Rock Star Gallery is his first solo appearance.

"I’ve waited for all these years, and this is the first time a gallery is totally devoted to what I do," he said.
