Tonight’s boys soccer game between 4A No. 5 Chaparral and Saguaro was supposed to determine the East Sky Region championship.
However, it was discovered over the weekend that a player who had played in Chaparral’s two region wins this semester had also played in a club tournament over winter break. That made the player ineligible according to AIA bylaws and will likely force Chaparral to forfeit the two wins.
If they do indeed forfeit the games, the Firebirds will be 0-2-1 with region games remaining against Saguaro, Desert Ridge and Basha. The top three teams from the seven-team region advance to state.
"Now we’re just fighting to get into fifth place so that we don’t have to play a (first-round) region (tournament) game," said Chaparral coach Jason Speirs, who added that he was "90 percent" certain the games would be forfeited.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Toros’ Wesolowski injured: Mountain View senior Jaclyn Wesolowski is likely out for the season after X-rays this past weekend revealed she has a broken left foot.
Wesolowski, a starter since her freshman season, is the Toros’ alltime leading scorer and rebounder. She is averaging 11 points and seven rebounds a game this season.
‘‘Unless some kind of miracle happens, her career here is over,’’ Mountain View coach Tom Bunger said. ‘‘The doctors are saying six to eight weeks.’’ Mountain View is 10-9 overall and 3-2 in 5A East Valley Region play this season.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
