Sip tea with Susan Isaacs, author of "Compromising Positions."
Learn poker from Ben Mezrich, writer of "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions" — on The New York Times best-seller list long enough to grow barnacles.
Or nibble lunch with Jane Heller, who has sold millions of her comic, breezy tales worldwide.
More than a dozen authors, including Peter Greenberg, travel editor on NBC’s "Today," will appear during the two-week third annual Jewish Book Fair starting Monday at Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center.
"We are building on this every year, so it is more and more exciting," says Tricia Serlin, the center’s director of adult services.
The fair, one of the center’s biggest events, offers bibliophiles a feast. More than 3,000 new tomes will be on sale with subjects ranging from romantic travel destinations in Arizona to the future of Israel.
"Last year, I think we had about 1,000 come to the authors’ events and many more to the book fair itself," says Sandy Adler, fair organizer. "The concept of the book fair is that it is a celebration of Jewish Book Month, which is November."
All of the featured authors are Jewish, though only some of the book subjects are Jewish. The double goal of the fair is to publicize the writers’ works while encouraging readers, Serlin says.
"So many times people don’t take time to pick up a good book and read. And they ought to." The fair, she says, is open to everyone.
"People think, ‘Oh, I can’t come, I’m not Jewish,’ but they can," Serlin says. "It’s a true community center."
