The Diamondbacks began progress toward a 2004 contract for third baseman Shea Hillenbrand, their only player eligible for salary arbitration.
“I think we're engaged in the process,” said general manager Joe Garagiola Jr., who spoke Monday with agent Adam Katz. “Now we work it, see how it goes.”
Hillenbrand is expected to make at least $2 million after making $407,500 in 2003, when he was traded midseason from Boston to Arizona and hit .267 with 17 homers for the D-Backs.
If Hillenbrand is not signed by Jan. 20, the sides will exchange salary figures for arbitration. Hearings are in February.
“We've had some discussions,” Katz said. “I have a good track record with Joe.”
Said Garagiola: “I think Adam and I have done enough work over the years that we don't need to get into posturing.”
SHORT HOPS: Manager Bob Brenly will meet with the coaching staff Thursday and Friday to make specific plans for spring-training workouts and discuss non-roster invitees. A full list of spring invitations should be out next week.. . .
The Diamondbacks hired Fred Seymour as assistant director of baseball operations. Seymour most recently served as director of operations for the Arizona Fall League and has worked for Boston and Montreal.
