Sen. Chuck Gray, R-Mesa, announced Thursday he will not seek re-election to the state Senate next year. In a written statement, Gray said he's made the decision in light of "business opportunities."

"I am a husband and father who served his state and community and is now preparing to return to private life for a time," he added.
Gray, a Mesa native, left the family construction business at 32, and joined the Mesa Police Department, where he served for 10 years until 2000. He then ran successfully for the Arizona House of Representatives in 2002 and 2004. After being appointed to the late Sen. Marilyn Jarrett's seat to complete her term in the Senate, Gray won a Senate seat in 2006 and again in 2008. He's served as majority leader in the Senate.
But this announcement may not mark the end of Gray's stint in politics. "I am not through with politics," he said. "You will see me in the future."
