CQ Press named Gilbert the 24th safest city in the country — and the highest-ranked community in the state — in a survey released Friday. The town was given a rating of -64.99 in the survey, which ranked Colonie, N.Y. the safest city in the country and Camden, N.J. the most dangerous.

Other Arizona cities named in the survey include Surprise (27), Scottsdale (54), Chandler (107), Peoria (136), Yuma (163), Mesa (170), Tempe (186), Glendale (245), Phoenix (302) and Tucson (329).

Gilbert spokeswoman Beth Lucas said the report “reaffirms what residents know about Gilbert being a safe, family-friendly town, no matter how big it gets.” The state Department of Economic Security’s latest figures put Gilbert’s population at 217,521.

Since 1999 CQ Press has been ranking all cities with a population of 75,000 or more by looking at six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. The 2009-10 report looks at data from calendar year 2008 released by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

Washington D.C.-based CQ Press publishes textbooks, research and other documents about U.S. government, world affairs, communication, political science and business.
