An east Mesa Motor Vehicle Division customer service location, which averages 9,600 customers a month, is one among 12 such sites statewide identified for closure as part of Arizona Department of Transportation’s measures to close a $100 million budget deficit. The Mesa site, dating back to the late 1980s, is located at 7631 E. Main Street.
ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel said the shortfall is due to a combination of lower transportation revenues and diversion of transportation funding by the Legislature to fix the overall state budget. The Mesa site was identified because it’s had issues in terms of inadequate parking and not enough space for testing areas. The parking area at times has also flooded, Nintzel added.
ADOT now awaits a U.S. Department of Justice review of the proposed closures to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 since these offices provide voter registration services. If the office does close, other nearby offices for customers include the southeast Mesa DMV site at 4123 E. Valley Auto Drive and an Apache Junction location at 575 N. Idaho Road.
