It will be Samson Szakacsy or Danny Sullivan starting at quarterback for Arizona State in Saturday’s season finale against Arizona, coach Dennis Erickson said Monday.
Szakacsy, a redshirt sophomore, started for the first time in his career last Saturday against UCLA, completing 15-of-22 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns. He did have problems turning the ball over, getting picked off once and losing three fumbles.
The Bruins scored two defensive touchdowns off Szakacsy turnovers, the difference in the 23-13 UCLA victory.

Erickson said Szakacsy did play well in stretches, but he would also have to take into account the crucial mistakes.
“I’ll probably make a decision (Tuesday),” Erickson said. “It’s kind of the same scenario where we were at last week with Danny and Sam (competing for the playing time). That’s where we’re at right now.”
Sullivan started the first nine games of the season, but has been bothered by a biceps injury the past two weeks. Erickson said Sullivan didn’t reach full strength until late last week.
Sullivan is a senior, and with Arizona State guaranteed a losing season, this will be his final contest as a Sun Devil.
True freshman Brock Osweiler started against Oregon two weeks ago, but was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury and hasn’t played since.
Osweiler is healthy enough to play but is not in the mix this week.
Wide receiver Kyle Williams, who had six catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns last week and three touchdown catches from Szakacsy in six quarters this year, endorsed Szakacsy at a press conference on Monday.
“I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t continue to be the No. 1 guy, but I don’t make those decisions,” Williams said.
INJURY UPDATE
Center Thomas Altieri will not play against the Wildcats. Garth Gerhart, who had been starting at right guard, will take over at center, his natural position. Brent Good will get the start at right guard.
Cornerback Deveron Carr (shoulder) is out for the game as well. Terell Carr will start in his place, and reserve Josh Jordan will see more playing time, Erickson said.
