PASADENA, Calif. – Kyle Williams couldn’t take much satisfaction in his six catches, 128 yards and two touchdowns Saturday.
Not when Arizona State lost to UCLA, 23-13.
ASU's QB swap doesn't help against UCLA
Bordow: Devils make no progress this season
“It’s almost like I didn’t have a big day,” said Williams, ASU’s senior wide receiver. “I wanted to get a “W” and get to a bowl game.”
Williams’ two touchdowns both came on busted plays.
Quarterback Samson Szakacsy scrambled right to avoid the rush and found Williams downfield for touchdowns of 35 and 70 yards.
“That’s Samson right there,” Williams said. “That’s what you get when have Samson back there scrambling.”
In regard to the offense’s lack of production this season, Williams said, “Changes need to be made.” But when asked if the scheme needs to change, he said, “The scheme is there. It’s a matter of execution and players making plays.”
TWO CARRS
Freshman cornerback Deveron Carr had a sling on his left arm after the game, a result of his shoulder popping out twice. It’s uncertain whether Carr will be able to play against Arizona.
Carr was replaced in the lineup by senior cornerback Terrell Carr, who had been suspended after being arrested on three misdemeanor counts Nov. 10. But charges weren’t filed, and coach Dennis Erickson said it was a university decision to reinstate Terrell Carr.
WASTED CHANCES
The Sun Devils had opportunities to get back in the game in the second half, but Thomas Weber missed a 42-yard field goal that would have cut UCLA’s lead to 20-10, and tight end Jovon Williams dropped a two-point conversion pass that would have sliced the margin to eight points early in the fourth quarter.
BOWLING FOR DOLLARS?
UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, who played his high school ball at Tempe McClintock, reflected on the Bruins winning their sixth game to become bowl eligible:
“I made mention to the team that you go through barriers and you set goals,” he said. “At the outset of the season, I wanted us to get to a bowl. The number six was magic in that regard.”
EXTRA POINTS
Freshman wide receiver Jamal Miles made his first career start. He became the 18th Sun Devil to make his first start this season.
Freshman linebacker Vontaze Burfict and cornerback Pierre Singfield led the Sun Devils with seven tackles apiece
