Boys & Girls Clubs schedule grand opening
The new 32,000-square-foot facility, at 300 E. Chandler Blvd., opened last Monday and includes two gymnasiums, meeting rooms, multipurpose rooms, a teen center, a game room, an arts room, office space, shared space for other nonprofit groups and the world’s largest Intel Computer Clubhouse. The club’s previous home was demolished to make way for a new facility on the same site.
The new building is about twice the size of the old one and capable of handling the roughly 140 children a day who attend, club representatives have said.
The club’s previous facility shut down on July 27. During the work, programs for children age 5-13 temporarily moved into the Downtown Chandler Community Center, at 125 E. Commonwealth Ave., while teen programs were held at the Chandler Public Library and Willis Junior High School.
Chandler voters approved the $7 million construction cost for the new Boys & Girls Club in 2007. The new facility meets the requirements of Chandler’s Green Building Program and has received “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” certification.
