The Arizona Diamondbacks have added Matt Williams as first base coach and Bo Porter as third base coach while Glenn Sherlock agreed to remain with the club as the bullpen and catching coach for the 2010 season under manager A.J. Hinch.
Williams, 43, is making his big league coaching debut. His lone coaching experience came in the final two months of the 2007 season when he served as the interim manager of the Double-A Mobile BayBears. He worked with the club as a spring training adviser in 2006.
Williams, who played for the D-Backs from 1998 to 2003, recently completed his fifth season as a member of the D-Backs' broadcast team while holding the title of special assistant to the president and CEO. Over his 17-year career, the third baseman hit .268 with 338 doubles, 35 triples, 378 home runs and 1,218 RBIs in 1,866 career games for the San Francisco Giants (1987-96), Cleveland Indians (1997) and D-Backs.
Porter, 37, was the Florida Marlins’ third base and outfield coach for the past three seasons (2007-09) while also serving as the club’s base-running instructor. In 2006, he managed the Class A Jamestown Jammers and also worked as the organization’s outfield coordinator. He joined the Marlins’ organization in 2005 as the hitting coach for Class A Greensboro during their inaugural season.
Williams, who will also handle the infield coaching duties, and Porter, who will oversee the outfielders' instruction, join a coaching staff that returns bench coach Kirk Gibson, hitting coach Jack Howell, pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr., and Sherlock.
