Queen Creek is accepting applications to fill a vacant Town Council seat created by Gail Barney’s resignation.
Barney resigned to run for mayor in March’s election, hoping to replace outgoing Mayor Art Sanders.
Barney served on the council for eight years. He was halfway through his current four-year term.
He was originally appointed to fill a vacancy created by then-councilwoman Toni Valenzuela, who resigned to run for mayor. Barney subsequently won two elections.
Applicants hoping to fill the seat need to submit a letter and resume to Town Clerk Jennifer Robinson by Nov. 19.
Applicants will be interviewed Nov. 30, and an appointment to the seat will be made the same day.
The appointed council member will serve the rest of Barney’s term, which expires in 2012.
The appointment will mark the first of several changes coming up on the council. Not only is Sanders not running for re-election, but council members Joyce Hildebrandt, Jon Wootten and Gordon Mortensen have also announced they will not seek another term.
Next year will be the first council without Hildebrandt since 1993. Wootten has served for eight years, and Mortensen for four.
Packets to run for council are also available through Robinson’s office. Completed packets for council and mayoral candidates intending to run in the March election are due Dec. 9.
Filling council seats
Election packets are available at the Queen Creek Town Clerk’s Office, 22350 S. Ellsworth Road. Hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Candidates must turn in completed packets between Nov. 9 and 5 p.m. Dec. 9.
Residents interested in filling the vacant council seat should submit a letter and resume to Town Clerk Jennifer Robinson by Nov. 19.
