Sophomore guard Kimberly Brandon scored 19 points while fellow sophomore Kali Bennett added 18 points as No. 16 Arizona State defeated Vanguard University 97-64 in exhibition play on Thursday.
Senior guard Danielle Orsillo (14 points), redshirt freshman forward Janae Fulcher (12 points) and senior forward Kayli Murphy (11 points) also scored in double figures for ASU, which shot 45 percent for the game.
As a team, the Sun Devils outrebounded Vanguard 65-28, including a plus-25 advantage (37-12) on the offensive boards. Bennett, who sat out last season after transferring from Washington in 2008, led ASU with 13 rebounds, 11 of which were offensive.
YOUTH FOOTBALL
The Gilbert Pop Warner Avengers won the state championship for the midget division last weekend, capping an undefeated season with a 24-14 victory over the South Pop Warner Stars in the title game.
The Avengers, coached by Keith James, finished 10-0 in the Arizona Youth Football Federation and captured the first Pop Warner state title for a Gilbert team.
The Avengers’ cheer squad also won the state title. Both advance to the WESCON Regionals this month. The first round of regionals is Saturday at Raymond Kellis High School in Glendale. The Avengers will face a Colorado River Conference team at 4 p.m.
Two other Gilbert teams also competed at the state tournament. In the Pee Wee Division, the Gilbert Predators fell to the Deer Valley Vandals 18-6. And in the Midget Division, the Gilbert Bruisers lost to the Deer Valley Crusaders 20-0.
TENNIS
16-year-old Nicole Melichar of Gilbert will compete in the Goldwater Women’s Tennis Classic beginning Monday at Phoenix Country Club.
Melichar will play alongside the likes of Alexandra Stevenson, who was a 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist, and Mirjana Lucic, who was also a 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist and the 1998 Australian Open doubles champ with Martina Hingis.
According to tournament director Sara Stablein, “The event will bring 64 women ranked 60 and above in the world.”
Melichar won four wild card matches in two days last weekend to guarantee herself a place in the main draw. She defeated Valley native and Oklahoma State alum Yawna Allen in three sets in the wild card final to secure her berth.
The tournament begins this Sunday morning with the qualifying rounds. Melichar’s first match will be Monday.
