Mom who left kids alone sentenced

A judge on Thursday sentenced a Mesa woman who left her two small children unattended overnight to three months in jail and 20 years of probation. According to Mesa police, Samantha Abernathy, 21, left her boys ages 1 and 3 at 2 a.m. on June 14 to visit her boyfriend across town.

A neighbor in the apartment complex at Gilbert Road and University Drive found the boys wondering around outside about 7 a.m.

Police found her apartment to be filthy and without food.

Abernathy pleaded guilty in September to child abuse.
