Desert Mtn.'s Harris wins badminton regional

Scottsdale Desert Mountain and Phoenix Xavier walked away with the individual singles and doubles titles Friday at the 5A Desert Valley Region Badminton Tournament at Desert Mountain High School.

Desert Mountain senior Emily Harris continued her dominance of the conference in winning the singles title, the third straight year she has been the region champ. Harris bested tourney No. 2 seed Brie Forster, 11-3, 11-0 in the title match.

Xavier's top-seeded doubles team of Danielle Dozer and Cate Welsh went the distance in topping No. 2 seed Stacey McGuire and Ashleigh Foltz of Scottsdale Chaparral, 15-1, 10-15, 15-1.

Also qualifying for next week's individual state tournament in singles from the region were Chaparral's Joelle Fang and Alex Hoffman (third) and Phoenix North Canyon's Samantha White and Kody Volkman (fourth). Advancing in singles were Xavier's Carissa Pappas (third) and Phoenix Central's Liz Garcia (fourth).

EAST VALLEY REGIONAL

Top-seeded Erika Rascon of Mesa Red Mountain beat unseeded teammate September Villaverde, 11-4, 11-6 at Mesa Dobson. Finishing third was Mesa Desert Ridge's Rebecca Veach and fourth was Mesa Mountain View's Kelly Kulp.

In region doubles, Mesa Westwood's No. 2-seeded team of Merced Perez and Gloria Portillo knocked off Mesa Skyline's Heather Blazich and Orimar Ramirez, 15-4, 17-15. Mesa High's Ruby Sanchez and Nicole Davis were third and Mesa Red Mountain's Chloe Benson and Alysa Hinton were fourth.

The 5A individual state tournament will be held Nov. 6-7 and Phoenix North Canyon High School.
